India vs. Australia – ICC World Cup 2011

ICC Cricket World Cup of 2011 is finally being hosted in Asia after 14 years. The event gained much heat when the top rated teams India and Australia qualified for the second quarter final. The second quarter final was held on 24th march, 2011 at Sardar Patel Stadium, Ahmadabad in India. Cricket fans from all over the world were expecting a hard-hitting competition among teams since it was expected that the winner team will play the semi final with Pakistan on 30th March, 2011.
The Indians had an advantage of their home ground while regarding the psychological advantages, Australia had its ascendancy. India was very confident because of its last victory against West Indies while Australia had suffered a big defeat against Pakistan during the last match.
The toss was won by Australia. At the start of this second quarter final match, Australia was very vigilant and reached 40 in 10 over. The most obdurate and uncompromising player and the current captain of Australia, Ricky Ponting scored 104 runs by hitting 7 fours and 1 six. Ponting was supported significantly by the contributions of Haddin and Hussey. Yuvraj, Zaheer and Ashwin from the opposite team were successful in taking 2 wickets each. Ponting socked a century with the company of David Hussey. A half century was scored by Haddin and eventually Australian team ended up with 260 runs in 50 over.
The score was not very much threatening for Indian team that consist of confrontational batsman and bowlers like Sehwag and Tendulkar. The Indians started with their greatest batsman Sachin Tendulkar accompanied by Virendar Sehwag. They managed to score 44 runs until Sehwag was wedged by Hussey. However the departure of Sehwag did not make any significant contribution towards Australia’s success as Sachin Tendulkar continued his stream of runs.
Hereafter the partnership of Sachin and Gautam Gambhir contributed 50 runs. Sachin Tendulkar, after hitting 7 boundaries was caught out by Haddin but managed to score his 94th ODI fifty. Yuvraj Singh also played a solid inning and scored another half century.
Yuvraj made 57 runs including 8 fours by hitting 8 boundaries while Raina scored 34 runs. The partnership of Raina and Yuvraj pierced all of the bowling attacks of Australia. Performance of Yuvraj was exceptionally good throughout the match and was therefore awarded with the title of ‘Man of the Match’. Indian team got DRS reviews twice during the match. Although Indian team suffered a minor middle-order collapse but during the 48th over India managed to achieve its target and won by 5 wickets.
The victory of Indian team in the second quarter final of ICC World Cup 2011 has ended Australia’s 12 years domination of the World Cup and has also wrecked the unbeaten streak of Australia for the last 34 World Cup ODI matches. Since India has won the second quarter final of ICC World Cup 2011 and qualified the semi final, the Indian team will now face Pakistan on 30th March, 2011 at Punjab Cricket Association in Mohali.
